Short Note on my ACM Outstanding Research Award

Such awards require hard work but also depend on serendipty and sheer luck. There are many good candidates deserving such recognition.

I am therefore extremely grateful to the ACM, the selection committee, my nominator and letter writers, and my students and collaborators over the years.

We are lucky to work in a friendly and open-minded community. After two years of pandemic, we all have learned to value this to an even higher degree.

In a way, this community is our professional family, with people we meet regularly, share interests and dinners with. Like in any family, there are issues, but we are nevertheless happy to have one and we all need to care for it.

Last, despite nearly 30 years of professional experience, I am glad to have kept my motivation intact and I believe this is in large part due to my interactions with members of this research community. Enjoying what you do, despite the usual hurdles and challenges, is essential in our profession.
